The prisoners were evacuated in the cold winter, running by orders of the SS Officers. Collapsed men were shot and Zalman, an acquaintance of Elie's fell to the ground with a stomachache. His fellow running prisoners trampled him. By morning they had covered forty-two miles. Elie wanted to sleep on the soft snow, however his father kept him awake. To fall asleep could mean certain death.
Sheltered in one the buildings of a deserted village, Rabbi Elichou, a good man came around looking for his son. When he asked Elie if he had seen him, Elie answered that he had not. However, later Elie remembered seeing the man's son running ahead. He realized that the son was trying to be separated from his father in order to increase his chance.....
