Chapter 6 Summary (Pages 81 - 92)

The prisoners were evacuated in the cold winter, running by orders of the SS Officers. Collapsed men were shot and Zalman, an acquaintance of Elie's fell to the ground with a stomachache. His fellow running prisoners trampled him. By morning they had covered forty-two miles. Elie wanted to sleep on the soft snow, however his father kept him awake. To fall asleep could mean certain death.

Sheltered in one the buildings of a deserted village, Rabbi Elichou, a good man came around looking for his son. When he asked Elie if he had seen him, Elie answered that he had not.
