Chapter 5 Summary (Pages 63 - 80)
On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the last day of the Jewish year, the prisoners were given a thick soup. No one would eat it until after prayers. Although many praises were given to God, Elie questioned and accused God. When Yom Kippur rolled around the issue of fasting was debated. Elie did not fast not only to please his father who forbid it, but as a rebellion against God.
With the New Year came the process of "selection" where the weak were chosen to go to the crematory. Elie had been moved to a different unit from his father and was worried about this process. Elie had to run in front of the SS officers for possible selection. He ran fast to show his strength. His friend said he ran so fast, the SS officers would never be able to see his number.
