Chapter 3 Summary (Pages 27 - 43)
Upon leaving the train and all their belongings, the Jews were separated by an SS non-commissioned officer into groups of men to the left and women to the right. Elie held his father's hand as he was separated from his Mother and his sister, Tzipora forever. Told to form groups of five people each, Elie and his father were asked how old they were by a fellow prisoner. When Elie said "fifteen," the prisoner coached him by telling him he is eighteen. Instead of fifty, Elie's father is told he was forty.
Being demoralized and shown the chimney, the prisoners were told their fate was death. There was a brief wave of revolting against this treatment but older prisoners begged their children not to do anything foolish.
