Summary

In 11-year-old Claire’s town in Utah, she felt left out as all her friends at school are Mormons. She was eager to renounce her atheist upbringing and convert to this faith in order to feel like she belonged. She felt separated from her family, being a product from her mother’s first marriage. She was ashamed and disgusted by her alcoholic father and was frustrated that she had to visit him in San Diego in a few weeks. She was at the same time, fearful of his rage which could be brought on very suddenly. Despite her best efforts to fit in, no one had invited her to join the Mormon faith.
