Elisa Perez is the character that sets this novel in motion. Her death is what spurs Marisol into traveling to Cuba, and it is her love of Cuba that Marisol was raised on.

A sugar queen, Elisa was raised in the wealthiest part of Havana, and she had endless stories of extravagance and scandal. After her family left, she spent the rest of her life in Miami, in exile.

Elisa also kept a lot of secrets, and it took some work for Marisol to uncover them and piece them together. Elisa was a devoted author, penning many letters to her love interest, which help construct her narrative further.
