Summary

Elisa fights the urge to ask her father about Pablo, to keep acting as though it is not all that she is thinking about. She spends her time writing him letters that might not ever reach him, in which she finally tells him how she feels about him. She writes, “I think I loved you from the first moment you told me about your passion for Cuba, your dreams for her future” (168). She is trapped with her thoughts, with her fears, with her uncertain beliefs, for four days. Then her father tells her that after calling in a favor, Pablo will be released.

The next day, Pablo is released, and Elisa goes to see him, right away ignoring her father’s wishes. When Guillermo brings Pablo home, Elisa is waiting for them. Pablo steps out of the car and into Elisa’s embrace...
