Chapter 49-52 Summary

Stone wakes up naked on a table and sees Van Fleet enter. Herb explains to Stone that the people in the next room are his friends, and referring to them as "dead" would upset them. Stone cautiously questions Herb, who tells him that he took Sasha from the accident site, but she stopped breathing after a few days, despite the medical care he gave her. Stone tries to talk to Herb, but whenever he mentions death or Herb's past, Van Fleet gets upset. Stone encourages Herb to tell Stone about the night Sasha fell. Herb tells Stone that he saw someone enter Sasha's building the night she fell, walking right past the sleeping doorman. Herb had seen Sasha and the person arguing and had seen Sasha go over the balcony. Herb slipped out when the doorman waited for Stone to return from chasing the perpetrator...
