Chapter 22 Summary

Mowat undertakes a series of studies that he has been neglecting. His first study is that of the local plant life and involves a hula-hoop-like device called a Raunkiaer's Circle, which is thrown at random over patches of local plant life. Mowat, who despises this process of cataloguing, spends two days studying plant life, before being approached by Ootek on the third day. After watching Mowat throw the Circle, Ootek laughs and says, "Pretty poor." Mowat challenges him to throw better and Ootek heaves the Circle over a great distance - it lands in a nearby lake. To Ootek's bewilderment, Mowat is ecstatic at loosing this device because he now has an excuse not to perform the backbreaking cataloguing.
