Chapter 17 Summary

The wolves spend most of their time hunting, because they must feed the growing pups and sleeping. However, when the wolves kill a caribou close to the den, they are afforded a day off; not having to hunt that evening. Mowat watches as an exhausted Albert, who has spent several hours fishing for sculpins, goes to sleep some distance from the den. George, who has observed this, crouches like a cat and slowly creeps toward Albert, and then pounces on the startled Albert. Albert chases George to the den area, where Angeline joins the game. Mowat has observed practical jokes on several occasions, especially when George, returning from evening hunts, was startled by a hiding Angeline.
