Angeline becomes noticeably bored with den life and begins to follow George and Albert for short distances when they go out on their evening hunts. An ever-vigilant mother, Angeline always returns to her pups, with the exception of one evening. When the wolves participate in their evening 'song,' Mowat observes a change in Angeline's tone. Uncle Albert, who has apparently understood this message, stays with the pups all evening while George and Angeline go off to hunt. The following morning, Angeline moves the pups one by one out of the den and to a new location. Uncertain of this behavior, Mowat talks to Ootek, who says that the pups are too large for the old den and are ready to begin their 'education.'
