Chapter 12 Summary

With the assistance of Mike's translating, Farley Mowat finds that Ootek has a great deal of knowledge about wolves. Ootek says that in addition to mice, wolves eat ground squirrels, which they occasionally prefer to caribou. According to Ootek, wolves sometimes feed on fish: chasing Northern Pike into shallows, hiding behind rocks to ensnare suckers and turning over rocks to find arctic sculpins. When Mowat asks about the caribou's relationship with the wolf, Ootek excitedly relates an Eskimo creation story, which claims that wolves were created to kill off weak and sick caribou so that the strong caribou could thrive. However, Mowat is suspicious of this relationship and states that there are hundreds of skulls from healthy caribou all around the area. "It was me killed those deer," Mike replies. Furthermore, Mike confesses.....
