Chapter 10 Summary
Since caribou are the only large herbivores in the arctic and the nearest herd is several hundred miles from the den, Mowat wonders how the wolves are staying alive. They appear healthy and each evening the males go out to hunt, but they do not return with any meat with which to feed the pups.
During late June and early July, Mike's cabin, as well as the rest of the region, becomes infested with rodents. Mowat considers, but soon dismisses, the idea that the wolves could be thriving on a diet of mice. Then, he sees Angeline go to the lake to get a drink. A flock of ducks lands nearby and Angeline begins acting as though she were insane.
