Mowat decides to move the base of his operations from Mike's cabin to the shore of the bay that is opposite the den area. He sets up a limited camp, taking only the necessities and hides inside his tent with the high-powered telescope trained on the den area. Mowat soon finds that he has inadvertently pitched his tent less than ten yards from one of the wolves' main thoroughfares to their western hunting grounds. Soon thereafter, one of the wolves, who is passing on the trail, becomes aware of Mowat's presence, but only glances in the tent's direction and continues on. Mowat observes that the wolves, much like domestic dogs, mark their territory by urinating on particular rocks, trees, etc. as part of a weekly ritual. One evening, when the wolves are away.....
