Chapter 5 Summary

The eighteen-year-old's name is Mike and he is a half-Eskimo, half-white trapper who is native to the region. Mike, who is at first wary of Mowat, takes him to a nearby cabin. Mike thinks Mowat's presence to be supernatural in nature, but soon becomes more at ease with the biologist after being introduced to wolf-juice. After promising Mike ten dollars for the rental of his cabin, Mowat, with the assistance of Mike's sled, moves his equipment to the new base camp. After several demonstrations of Mowat's scientific methods, Mike becomes leery of the scientist and, despite being seventy miles away from home and having no possible form of communication, tells Mowat that his grandmother has become sick and needs his help.
