Summary

This section concerns pages 212-247 of the novel. The final chapter of the novel opens with Hans recalling Juliet Schwarz, the marriage counsellor he and Rachel saw to repair their relationship. He recalls that, four months after Rachel moved in with Martin, she suddenly moved out again, without explanation. Telling Hans that she and Jake had plans to go to India for Christmas with Martin, she asks him if he will go in Martin's place. Agreeing to do so, they set off on holiday together.

Hans spends quality time with his son in India, and, when a hotel receptionist tells him his wife has had no calls, he comes to realize that she is waiting for a call from Martin, and understands that Martin was the one who left her (216).
