Summary

This section concerns pages 111-171 of the novel. The chapter opens with Hans remembering his first spring alone in New York, and his driving lessons around the city. He decides to drive his instructor to Staten Island, to see the cricket field in the new season, and in doing so recalls the death of his father, who died in a car accident when Hans was young. After his lessons, Hans sits his test and is surprised to find that he has emphatically failed (119).

Meanwhile, Hans is in a routine of spending every other weekend in London, flying by night to be with his son after work on Fridays. He and Rachel stay at her parents' house during the trips, and Hans tries to discover clues about her life without him (120).
