Summary

In Chapter 1, Deese’s boss, a loan shark named Roger Smith, wants him to harm a man named Howell Paine by crushing his hands because Paine has not paid back the money he borrowed. Smith wants his money back and to show others what will happen if they behave in the same manner. Deese is a killer who is very particular about the barbecue sauce he uses. He goes to do the job. However, he runs into trouble when Howell Paine fights back and bites him in the leg. In addition, a neighbor witnesses the attack. Later, on the same day, the police arrest Deese based on the video the witness took and the hole in his leg that results from Howell Paine’s bite.
