Part 2, Chapters 28, 29 and 30 Summary
Nathan finally succumbs to illness and collapses on the road after a day of working in the quarry. Other workers carry Nathan to the temple, where he dies later that evening as Rukmani strokes his head in her lap. Rukmani now has enough money to return home, and instead of her beloved Nathan, she shares the journey with Puli, who is hopeful of being treated at Kenny's hospital.
Selvam, Ira and Sacrabani are saddened that Nathan has died but are overjoyed that Rukmani has returned and brought Puli with her. Only when Rukmani and Puli have arrived home does Rukmani reveal that she and Nathan had adopted the boy. His life will be spent in the nature of the village far away from the ravages of the city. Selvam embraces Rukmani in all ways, assuring her that they will again manage as a family.
