Part 2, Chapters 26 and 27 Summary
At the direction of the servants at the doctor's home, Nathan and Rukmani head out the next morning to look for Murugan, who is supposedly employed by the Collector who lives on Chamundi Hill. Initially mistaken for servants, Nathan and Rukmani explain that they are Murugan's parents who have come to find him and live with him and his new wife.
The other servants introduce Nathan and Rukmani to Murugan's wife, Ammu, who tells her in-laws that Murugan has disappeared and has not been seen for two years. Understandably, Ammu is upset at being left to raise two children on her own in employment as a servant. Having never met Nathan and Rukmani, Ammu is a little wary of the two, and her belligerent attitude does not soothe any awkwardness in this first encounter.
