Part 1, Chapters 18, 19 and 20 Summary

Rukmani is pleased to find that Kenny has once again returned to the village after another one of his absences. Rukmani finds time to talk with Kenny and share the devastating news of her family's losses as well as the hardships the whole village has endured from the drought. In addition to the deaths of two of her sons, Rukmani tells Kenny that Ira is pregnant as a result of her prostitution.

Kenny finds Rukmani's resignation to her fate defeatist and alarming. The philosophies of the Indian people are difficult for him to understand because he is an outsider with more conventionally acceptable western and worldly views. By the same token, Rukmani finds it difficult to understand Kenny's life, what little she knows of it. For the first time, Kenny tells Rukmani of his wife and children in England, and Rukmani cannot understand...
