Part 1, Chapters 15, 16 and 17 Summary

The family's hardships increase even more when Nathan and Rukmani's son Raja is killed at the tannery. The body is brought home with no explanation, and Raja is cremated. A few days later some authorities come to the home and explain to Rukmani that Raja was killed while stealing a cowhide. Rukmani is inconsolable over the loss of her son but must concentrate on saving her remaining children from starvation.

Soon after, Rukmani is awakened one night to see a woman inside the family's hut. Rukmani begins to fight with the intruder before realizing that this woman is her own daughter, Ira. Unbeknownst to Rukmani, Ira has been going into town at night to make money as a prostitute. With the extra money, Ira is able to purchase food for Kuti.
