Part 1, Chapter 12 Summary

Arjun and Thambi continue to confuse Nathan and Rukmani by leading a worker's strike at the tannery for better wages. The two boys refuse to return to the tannery even when they are threatened with the loss of their jobs. Many others do return, however, and the strike fails, forcing Arjun and Thambi back to their parents' home. Once again, Nathan is the sole provider for the family, which now faces starvation.

Soon word comes to the village that there are jobs available in the tea fields of Ceylon. Even though the island is far from their home, Arjun and Thambi leave to try their luck. Nathan and Rukmani's son Murugan also leaves, headed for a faraway village where he is to be employed at the home of a doctor, a colleague of Kenny's.
