Part 1, Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 Summary
The tannery continues to have dubious implications for the village. As the business grows, many of the local boys accept jobs there in order to get higher wages than they could make from farming. Unfortunately, the cost of living also rises in the town, which makes goods almost unattainable for anyone not working at the tannery. Many of the small shops that have been in the village for many years are forced to close, causing even more economic distress. As a result of the economic changes, one of the village women, Kunthi, makes herself available as a prostitute to all the men who are now working in the town.
Rukmani is soon faced with a difficult family situation, when Ira is returned home. The young woman's husband is distraught because there have been no children in their marriage after five years. The divorce devastates Ira, but Nathan and Rukmani accept...
