Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Ira is six years old, and Rukmani has had no other children, a fact which deeply concerns Nathan. Rukmani prays to the gods, yet no more children come. Finally Rukmani meets a white doctor named Kennington, also known as Kenny, who provides fertility treatments for Rukmani. Rukmani gives birth to a son named Arjun. Despite misgivings about white men, especially doctors, Rukmani continues to receive treatments throughout her life and bears four more sons named Thambi, Murugan, Raja and Selvam. Rukmani keeps her treatments secret. Nathan is extremely pleased, but Rukmani lives in fear that her husband may learn about the fertility treatments one day.
