Stagno

Stagno is the town where Tiller lives with Val and Veej. Because Val and her son are in witness protection, Tiller says he cannot disclose the real name of the town, or its exact location. Despite Tiller's refusal to reveal his whereabouts, he describes Stagno as a town like any other exurban town. He, Val, and Veej live here in relative peace until Tiller begins fearing Val will be discovered by some nefarious individual.

The family rarely leaves the house, ordering everything online, and homeschooling Veej. When Veej discovers a love for cooking, they begin inviting neighborhood guests for dinner. The new hosting ritual bolsters the family, yet terrifies Tiller. By the end of the novel, Tiller learns to relinquish his attempts at control, and to embrace life in Stagno with his unexpected family.
