What is spotlighting and why does Crucet condemn it as bigoted, even though it may seem harmless at first?

Crucet describes spotlighting as the act of placing the burden on one person, usually of an ethnic minority, to represent their whole community. For example, at college, being one of the only Latinx people, she was often asked what Latinx people thought of this or that, as if she could speak on behalf of so many people. The reason that this is problematic, Crucet explains, is because it is a form of racism and suggests that all people of color are the same, whereas nobody would think to ask a white person where all white people stand on a certain issue.
