Chapter 14 Summary
Asher returns to Brooklyn to find his parents' apartment empty. They are at the University of Chicago, attending a conference about the state of Judaism on college campuses. Yet, Asher sees his parents throughout the apartment in visions of old memories. He goes to synagogue, where old familiar faces greet him warmly. He also enjoys friendly visits with Uncle Yitzchok and Yudel Krinsky in their respective stores. Asher dreads how all these people will react when his crucifixions are made public.
He tells Anna that he is having second thoughts, but she talks him into keeping the crucifixions in the exhibition. They have already been purchased by a major museum. Asher visits Jacob, who has had stomach surgery, and Jacob assures him that the crucifixions are marvelous.
When Aryeh returns from Chicago, he seems proud of Asher's work for the first time. He notes that wherever he travels people ask...
