Chapter 13 Summary

In Italy, Asher finds himself deeply moved by art works depicting Jesus' suffering on the cross. He is particularly struck by Michelangelo's Pieta. This is a sculpture of the wounded Jesus lying in his mother's arms. Asher feels ashamed by this reaction but cannot stop himself from sketching the Christian art. He copies the Italian crucifixion paintings and on several occasions is horrified to realize that he has drawn his mother's face.

Asher decides to stay in Europe for a year or two. While his parents are not pleased, they send him good wishes. Wherever Asher travels in Europe, he meets people whose lives have been changed by his parents' work. Asher arranges to meet Avraham Cutler, the head of the Paris yeshiva that Aryeh established, at a kosher restaurant, and they stop in.....
