In Italy, Asher finds himself deeply moved by art works depicting Jesus' suffering on the cross. He is particularly struck by Michelangelo's Pieta. This is a sculpture of the wounded Jesus lying in his mother's arms. Asher feels ashamed by this reaction but cannot stop himself from sketching the Christian art.
