In this chapter, the worlds of Hasidism and art become seem less estranged. When he enrolls at the yeshiva high school, Asher is surprised to see a French class on his schedule. The registrar says that the Rebbe has ordered Asher to take four years of French, because his work as an artist may take him to France. Jacob attends a Ladover festival and joins Asher in a ritual dance that involves carrying the Torah. Jacob later sculpts the two artists in that moment and cannot bear to part with it. Asher first sees the sculpture at a successful gallery exhibition of Jacob's work in October. Jacob spends a month working in Europe, and there he shares a friendly visit with Asher's parents.
Asher's room becomes crowded with paintings, so Yitzchok renovates the attic.....
