Harlem

Harlem is where Daddy is from and where Ebony travels to stay for what Ebony believes is a short visit. It is where Ebony meets Diane and the other members of the Nine Flavas crew. Ebony is reluctant to embrace city-living, but gradually begins to come around as she learns that her stay will be long term. It is where the kids all run the streets, play in the open fire hydrant to cool off, and go to the neighborhood bodega for snacks.

Alabama

Alabama is where Ebony lives with her mother and grandfather prior to the start of the novel. Ebony longs to be back in Alabama with her beloved grandfather and joining the space program. It is where Momma stays and Granddaddy dies. The rural area serves as contrast to Ebony being thrust into the bustle of Harlem.
