Summary

Chapter 10 opens with Ebony reluctantly going to church with Bianca and Senora Luz. En route, Bianca is playing step-on-a-crack-break-your-momma’s-back. Ebony does not understand why Bianca is playing the game. Bianca asks a question about the moon and Ebony's “soulshine starts to well up” (54), but Ebony fights it.

In Chapter 11, Ebony is disappointed to see some of the “nefarious minions” (57) at the church. Bianca introduces Ebony to Calvin. Some of the minions comment on Ebony’s clothes, as she is wearing “a Superman short set” (59); Ebony thinks about how her mother would not approve. Senora Luz apologizes for Ebony’s appearance and Ebony insists she will not be back to church. Ebony is reprimanded for disrespecting her elders.

In Chapter 12, Ebony joins Bianca in Sunday school. The other children comment on Ebony’s Superman shirt being a false idol in church. Ebony shouts...
