Summary

In Chapter 5, when Martin intentionally hurts Turtle, she hits back by running away. On this particular trip, Turtle walks barefoot and eats watercress when she is hungry. After walking three hours she shoots a rabbit. In the early afternoon, she starts a fire and cooks the rabbit. Even though she knows she needs to go home she does not.

In the late afternoon, Brett and Jacob, two boys whom Turtle recognizes from high school walk up to the area where she is sitting. She hides from them but listens as they banter and tease one another. They are lost. Brett suggests they camp there but Jacob reminds him that there is no water. When the boys start walking again, Turtle follows them. They walk to a cottage built from scrap lumber. Jacob compares their adventure to books he has read. Brett criticizes Jacob...
