Randy

Randy is the toy horse Caroline always has with her, and it is a symbol of her need for companionship. Early in the novel, she says she almost always has Randy with her. There is a hole in his body and she tells secrets into that hole, which is another symbol of her need for companionship.

The Blue Ribbon

Caroline has a blue ribbon that symbolizes her past, though she does not reveal the details until after Father's death. Father kidnapped Caroline and the community came together, putting up blue ribbons in honor of their search for a missing child. This, along with Randy the horse, is Caroline's most prized possession.

The Watches

Caroline and Father have watches that are set to match each other but do not reflect the true time, which is a symbol that they are living separated from traditional society.
