Summary

In Chapter 5, Father plans for them to catch a train; but, they cannot get on board. Caroline berates him for “jerking around” so much, saying he is drawing the attention he is trying to avoid. Father buys a bus ticket, then instructs Caroline to buy a round-trip ticket for Bend, Oregon. He says they are not planning to return, but her round-trip ticket is meant to throw off anyone looking for them. They do not sit together while waiting or after getting on the bus. She has a seat to herself and she touches the blue ribbon around Randy's neck for comfort. They change buses in Eugene and a woman sits next to Caroline.
