As the scene begins, we see everyone assembled in the church for the marriage of Claudio and Hero. The friar asks Claudio if he wants to marry Hero, and Claudio says "No." However, Leonato takes this as a play-on-words, assuming that Claudio is saying he wants to be married to Hero rather than performing the ceremony himself. The friar then asks if there is any reason why they should not be married, and Leonato again answers for Claudio. This time Claudio makes an issue out of it, however, asking Leonato if he freely gives Hero to marriage as a maid, meaning as a virgin. When Leonato says yes, Claudio gives Hero back, noting that she is not a virgin.
Leonato accuses Claudio of taking Hero's virginity, but Claudio responds that he has.....
