Summary

Less than a year after Walt’s encounter with Marion, he places a bet on a racehorse and wins a large sum of money. He approaches Walsh and proposes opening a club with Walsh as a co-investor. Walt names the club Mr. Vertigo’s and opens it in December of 1937. Walt runs the club, has sexual relationships with many women, and continues devotedly following the St. Louis Cardinals. Walt especially likes the pitcher Dizzy Dean, who is one of the best on the team. However, one year, after Dean is traded to the Chicago cubs, a ball hits his foot during a game and breaks one of his toes. Dizzy continues to pitch before the toe is healed, and the misbalance of the injured toe causes an injury to his arm. Dean’s arm does not recover, but he insists on continuing to play...
