Through the character of Srinivas, the novel shows that while some begin writing in pursuit of fame and wealth, others, like Srinivas write in order to understand and to process the world around them. Although Srinivas is pleased by the audience that he gains through The Banner, the novel shows that Srinivas is motivated by his own personal questions about the world and by his desire to have those questions answered.

Frequently Srinivas is seen drafting new article ideas and titles in his head, in response to whatever is going on around him. This pattern continues when an initially enthusiastic and optimistic Srinivas becomes a script writer for Sampath’s film production company: “All night his head seethed with ideas and would not let him catch even a wink.
