Summary

Felicity has been dropped off in a field by her new husband. She is still in her wedding dress, picking “grains of rice from the embroidery” (1). As she is waiting, a woman approaches her and asks whether this is her first time getting married. Nené asks Felicity whether she is going to wait for her new husband to come back for her, and advises her that “they get tired of waiting and they leave you” (3). Nené further explains that the rest of the women left here have experienced the same fate and all they do now is cry. This criticism clearly sparks anger in Nené, as she shouts, “screw all that crying and crying” (3).

Felicity begins to cry, muttering that she does not understand how he could have done this to her. Clearly tired, Nené walks away and Felicity runs after her, begging her...
