Chapter 8 Summary

The Foxes sail from Baltimore on the ship, the Unicorn, in the middle of the night. At breakfast, the dining room is full. Two families, the Bummicks and the Spellgoods, occupy the other three tables. The Reverend Gurney Spellgood's family occupies two of the tables. He is a missionary and leads his family in a loud hymn before each meal. They hold a loud prayer meeting on deck each day. When Rev. Spellgood quotes the Bible, saying the last will be first, Father corrects him, pointing out that the passage from Luke actually reads, "Men will come from the north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God. And behold, some of the last who will be first, and some of the first who will be last." Soon, Reverend Spellgood.....
