Summary

In “The Book,” when Susan finished reading the novel, she felt she had wasted her time because there were so few similarities between it and what had happened to Frank. She had no idea what Cecily might have seen to convince her that Stefan was innocent.

Susan remembered how Alan had fought with her over details she thought should be changed in the novel. Their most serious argument had been about Eric because Susan felt that Alan was using the character to make fun of disabled people. She thought that by making Eric a peeping Tom, Alan was suggesting that people with disabilities were inadequate.

Susan noted that the copy editor also had issues that Alan refused to change. For instance, it was noted that the steam engine that was specified in the final chapter of the novel...
