Moon Tiger
The Moon Tiger is a brand of flammable insect repellent. The dark green coil is set on fire and smolders for hours. The smoke repels mosquitoes as the coil gradually turns to ash. When Claudia and Tom Southern are in bed at the Winter Palace, a hotel in Luxor, a Moon Tiger burns beside the bed. As it burns, Tom tells Claudia of his early life. They make love, and Tom implies that they will be married after the war. The hours measured by the burning of this single coil are the happiest that Claudia ever experiences. Thus, the Moon Tiger symbolizes both the brevity and the beauty of love.
