Mari

Mari is the heroine of the novel. She is half Companion and half Earth Walker. She was raised as an Earth Walker by her mother, Leda, who hid Mari's true identity from the clan because she was frightened of what would happen if everyone found out the truth. Mari's father, Galen, had been killed by his people, and Mari and Leda feared the same fate.

Because Mari had to hide her true self, she was very isolated and alone most of the time. She felt bitter towards the clan of Earth Walkers because she had to hide from the and live apart from them, and she hated the Companions for what they did to her father. She felt as if she belonged nowhere, except for with her mother and Rigel.
