Summary

In the section “The Calm,” through her narration, Viola explains to Bradley what Noise is. She tries to convince Bradley and Simone that they will get used to it but Bradley asks them to leave him alone for a while. Before they leave the scout ship where Simone had been bandaging Viola’s ankles, Viola asks Simone to bring another bandage outside. Away from Bradley, Viola shows Simone a metal band on her arm that has become badly infected. She says that the Mayor did not put the band on her but that he did put similar bands on the other women. Even though Simone does not think that Viola is well enough to go see Todd that night, Viola goes anyway.
