Summary

Vivian made friends with members of various women’s groups. She organized her friends to collect used clothing, have them cleaned and repaired and set them up in her garage for the poor. She also collected money for $350 scholarships for students who finished the eleventh grade and for gift cards at department stores. The mayor of Stockton called and asked Vivian if she could help a couple and their teenage children. They were unemployed, couldn’t find work and were living in their car. She told the mayor to have them come to her house the next day. She fed them, gave them clean clothes and helped the man a job at a garage and the woman at a grocery store. Finally, she found accommodations for them that night.
