Summary

Mark was tall, handsome, well-built, and black. He was from Texas but found work in Detroit. He wanted to save money so he could hire a trainer to become a boxer. Three of his fingers were cut off in a machine in the automotive plant where he worked. The accident ended his dream to be a boxer. He moved to San Francisco which is where Maya met him. He wasn’t bitter over his lost dream. He was a soft-spoken man who even paid for Maya’s babysitter on occasion.

But, when Mark thought Maya had another man, he punched her in the face repeatedly. They were on a cliff overlooking Half-Moon Bay. The blows knocked her unconscious. When she came to he was crying and calling her names. He hit her again with a large board, and she was out again.
