Summary

The chapter "After Her Kind" takes place starting in 1932, when Jane is 16 years old, and elapses an unspecified number of years, perhaps most of the decade of the 1930s (209). When Jane moves in with Grace, Grace has already been married and divorced to a man named Noble Sidebottom, and is indeed running a seamstress business by herself. Grace makes Jane do an incredible amount of work both around the house and for the business. Also, Grace continues to make cutting comments about Jane's lack of knowledge about sex, such as bizarrely claiming that Jane has the advantage of never having to deal with men (206). Jane continues to see her parents regularly, whether they come in to town or whether Jane drives out on the weekends to meet them, after being taught to drive by Grace.
