Summary

Jane begins to be attracted to a boy from the Key farm, which neighbors the Chisolm farm. One day, as they moved closer together in the woods to have their first conversation, Jane feels herself have an accident and hurriedly says that she will meet him the next day, running back to her house. After cleaning her clothes, Jane is worried that the boy would not be there tomorrow, and runs back to the same spot to find him there. The two of them have an awkward, flirty conversation, with Jane introducing herself and the boy introducing himself as Elijah. Jane begins the conversation by discussing the "rumors" -- about her incontinence -- that must exist about her, with Elijah responding: "'I don't listen to rumors'" (169).
