Summary

In “Miss Emily Defends a Friend,” Mr. and Mrs. Dickinson, who have been informed by Austin of Ada’s predicament, assume Ada has brought this on herself. Emily is appalled by her family’s righteousness and tries to defend her friend. Ada thanks her for her kindness and support. In “Miss Ada Makes a Confession,” Daniel visits Ada and demands an explanation, having been told by Patrick that he knew what her bedroom look like and what her nightclothes smell like. Ada does not want to tell him, but Emily, who overhears from the doorway, thinks he should know the truth and tells him. Daniel is at first stunned, tears stream down his face, and after a while, he dashes out the door.
