Summary

In “Emily Refuses an Invitation,” Emily has become even more introverted and reclusive, preferring to stay in the safety of her bedroom where she can encourage inspiration for her writing. She resists the temptation of sharing her poetry with the world, knowing her father would not approve of her being a Woman of Letters. Sue invites her to attend a salon she is hosting, where a great poet will be in attendance, but Emily declines. In “Miss Ada Takes a Ride on a Buckboard,” Ada and Daniel continue to spend more time together and he asks her to join him on a country ride on a Buckboard. They reminisce about their home country, he mentions that he has been saving some money, and they passionately kiss. Afterwards, Ada finds Patrick in the kitchen...
