The bungalow

The bungalow where Enid and Margery stay throughout the expedition symbolizes safety and security. The bungalow helps Enid and Margery feel protected and free from the public eye. In the bungalow, they each feel comfortable to open up to the other, bringing the two women even closer. The bungalow is the setting for many of the most important plot points. First, Margery realizes the extent of Enid’s devotion to her when she cleans up the bungalow upon their arrival and even sets up a small study for Margery. Next, the bungalow acts as a safe house for Enid once news of Percival Collett’s murder reaches New Caledonia. Additionally, the bungalow is the place where Enid gives birth to her first child, Gloria. Lastly, the bungalow is where Enid tragically falls and dies at the end of the novel.
